🌋 Earthquake Safety Guide

Free, science-based. Share with anyone in a seismic zone.

During an Earthquake

Critical
⚠️ DROP · COVER · HOLD ONDrop to hands and knees. Cover under a sturdy desk or against an interior wall. Hold on until shaking stops completely.
1
Indoors — stay inside

Most injuries happen when people try to move. Get under a desk, away from windows.

2
In bed — stay there

Cover your head with a pillow. Avoid glass and falling objects.

3
Outdoors — open area

Move away from buildings, trees, and power lines. Drop and cover your head.

4
Driving — pull over safely

Avoid bridges and overpasses. Stay in car with seatbelt on.

5
Near coast — move inland immediately

Tsunamis can arrive within minutes of a nearby offshore quake.

🔍

After the Shaking Stops

Important
1
Expect aftershocks

They will come. Some nearly as strong as the main quake.

2
Check for gas leaks

Smell for gas. If detected — open windows, leave, no flames or switches.

3
Text, don't call

Networks overload in disasters. Texts get through when calls don't.

4
Don't use elevators

Use stairs only until building is cleared as safe.
